Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach, California on the 24th of August, 1972. DuVernay was encouraged to pursue her love of the arts by her aunt Denise as a young kid. The aunt she had was a nurse who was a night shift worker so she could devote her day to literature, theatre, and art. She introduced DuVernay to the film of 1961 West Side Story and DuVernay was captivated by it. DuVernay learnt by doing that art can be a powerful instrument to engage in social activism. DuVernay developed a social mindful by her mother. DuVernay resided in Compton for most of her youth, however she spent every summer in the company of the extended family of her father living in Lowndes County Alabama. Her father recalled watching the civil rights march of the past on the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. The summers DuVernay spent there inspired her later to direct a movie about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in 1990. Following graduation, DuVernay enrolled in the University of California Los Angeles where she earned degrees in English and African American study. DuVernay was a student at the college when she started to get interested in production for broadcast journalism. DuVernay began her career working as an intern at CBS News during the O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay remembers being asked check the trash in the house of a member of jury. She was disappointed by her journalistic duties and decided to move into the field of public relations. DuVernay began her first position as a publicist at a small production studio right out of school. The DuVernay Agency is her first PR agency. Alongside PR, the agency has created lifestyle networks and advertising campaigns such as the Urban Beauty Collective.
